This paper describes a framework for understanding and analyzing the use of recent advances in information technology by managers. It first describes a set of research studies by the authors exploring such use. Based on that research, a framework is presented that looks at constraints on managerial use of information technology and at the impacts of that use on individuals and organizations. Several parts of the framework are described in the context of data and examples from the research.
