Within the past two years, the Internet has emerged as a fundamental information medium and has created much enthusiasm, from Wall Street to Main Street. Our sociological and economic structure is being rewritten, the corporate world is dramatically realigning its strategies, and individuals are showing a long-inhibited eagerness to explore. Nothing less. The Internet and the countless possibilities associated with the Internet are quickly reshaping the way we conduct business, and redefining the way we relate to one another. It has however left individuals, organizations and corporations with many more questions than answers.

CommerceNet and Nielsen Media Research teamed up in 1995 to answer many of these questions. The initiative called for an initial Internet Demographics Survey and a Recontact Survey six months down the road. The initial Survey was designed to assess the dimension of the new medium in terms of personal Access and Usage patterns, while the objective for the Recontact Survey was to identify behavioral changes over time.
